Experimental organic farm

Panorama de la entrada a la finca experimentalThe organic and healthy food source is a production alternative that has great priority within Chinantlan. For this we have an experimental organic farm which is located nearby hospital España, 3 kilometers on the road: “carretera los millonarios” in the Tejano community of Chinantlan. On this farm the emphasis lies on the diversification of production, the use of clean (solar) energy in irrigation, minimized use of insecticides and the use of organic fertilizers. The property is being managed by a group of women in the community under the guidance of the technical expert of Chinantlan in the area of agriculture.

Cultivo de piñas en la finca experimentalClean and sustainable agricultural production

In general, organic agriculture is known for the use of appropriate techniques that in principle avoid using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, but has a broader meaning, to the extent that its purpose is to reach a "clean and sustained agricultural production”. Nowadays, there are various concepts of organic agriculture, which originate in philosophical interpretations and various mechanisms or methods that are used for the procurement of healthy products (free of contaminants) and ecologically (with respect for, and while protecting nature) produced. The organic production system, is attempting to enhance the natural cycles of life, not suppressing nature and therefore it is the result of the dynamic interaction of soil, plants, animals, humans and the environment.

The goals of the organic production farm of the Chinantlan Association are:

  • Diversifying crops on the farm
  • Make use of existing resources in the farms for the manufacture of insecticides and fertilizers
  • Improve and diversify the diet of families
  • Being a training center for farming families
  • Getting to the production of organic certification.

The integrated management of the organic farm was startedon January 2007 and we have been successful in producing various crops.  The diversification of production includes plantain crop, amaranth, corn (baby corn and corn), vegetables (tomato, pepper, squash, cucumber), cassava, pineapple (Hawaiian), a variety of medicinal plants (Lime), Flor de Jamaica, Quequisque and fruit (mango, citrus, avocado, coconut). All production that comes from the farm is sold fresh at the offices of the Chinantlan Association.
