The organic and healthy food source is a production alternative that has great priority within Chinantlan. For this we have an experimental organic farm which is located nearby hospital España, 3 kilometers on the road: “carretera los millonarios” in the Tejano community of Chinantlan. On this farm the emphasis lies on the diversification of production, the use of clean (solar) energy in irrigation, minimized use of insecticides and the use of organic fertilizers. The property is being managed by a group of women in the community under the guidance of the technical expert of Chinantlan in the area of agriculture.
Clean and sustainable agricultural production
In general, organic agriculture is known for the use of appropriate techniques that in principle avoid using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, but has a broader meaning, to the extent that its purpose is to reach a "clean and sustained agricultural production”. Nowadays, there are various concepts of organic agriculture, which originate in philosophical interpretations and various mechanisms or methods that are used for the procurement of healthy products (free of contaminants) and ecologically (with respect for, and while protecting nature) produced. The organic production system, is attempting to enhance the natural cycles of life, not suppressing nature and therefore it is the result of the dynamic interaction of soil, plants, animals, humans and the environment.
The goals of the organic production farm are:
- Diversifying crops on the farm
- Make use of existing resources in the farms for the manufacture of insecticides and fertilizers
- Improve and diversify the diet of families
- Being a training center for farming families
- Getting to the production of organic certification.

A variety of fresh products
The integrated management of the organic farm was startedon January 2007 and we have been successful in producing various crops. The diversification of production includes plantain crop, amaranth, corn (baby corn and corn), vegetables (tomato, pepper, squash, cucumber), cassava, pineapple (Hawaiian), a variety of medicinal plants (Lime), Flor de Jamaica, Quequisque and fruit (mango, citrus, avocado, coconut). All production that comes from the farm is sold fresh at the offices of the Chinantlan Association.
Vino Chinantlan
Chinantlan produced its first bottes of wine in year 2005 and works with women from our region in the elaboration of the wine. Today we are producing three tipes of wine, Mango-wine and wines from the tropical fruits Coyolito and Flor de Jamaica. With its goal of increasing employment for people in rural areas of Chinandega, particularly for women, with their agribusiness identity and its aim to encourage cooperation and innovation throughout the production chain, the Wine project very well represents the vision Chinantlan has on integral development. Currently, there are 30 producers involved, producing 11000 liters of wine a year. The commercialization is oriented on sale within and outside the country. In Chinandega one can buy Chinantlan wine in several supermarkets and craft stores, as well as in the Chinantlan office downtown.
Value of the project
The strategic plan of the Chinantlan Association, contains the strategic outline of production and economics, which aims to provide support for comprehensive economic development processes.
The context of this strategic line is the ongoing project of strengthening the agricultural process of production of raw material (pink hibiscus, mango and papaya) with 60 small producers, industrial processing in sweet wine of rock, dehydration fruit, with the construction of industrial campus and marketing of the final product in marketing channels of local and national level in Nicaragua.

Prospects
Our dream for the future is the construction of an industrial plant for the production of wine. We also hope to increase wine tourism with a focus on where the fruits and flowers in the field of communities around Chinandega are grown. We offer the possibility to receive tourists arriving on cruise ships so that they know the production process from planting to wine production and at the same time they get to know aspects of the work and life of Nicaraguan producers in rural areas of the country.
