17.12 Children and adolescents in a high social risk In order to celebrate the finalization of a successful year of the project “futbol sala”, four districts with over 100 children and adolescents and their parents organized a ‘fiesta’ with self-made piñatas, music, dance, vocals, quizzes and other activities. In the end the children and adolescents evaluated the past year and proposed ideas so that we can improve further in the coming year.
16.12. 25 years of collaboration with Eindhoven and Leverkusen The 10th of December marked the 25th anniversary of the collaboration with Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Leverkusen (Germany) was celebrated. In Leverkusen there was a big celebration with a live video transmission to Chinandega. In Chinandega there were celebrations with music, acknowledgment and flashbacks in the past. All participants were satisfied and thankful to be a part of this cooperation. In 25 years different areas profited from the successful cooperation with the objective to better the quality of life in Chinandega.

15.12. Visit with the delegation from Chinandega in Eindhoven and Leverkusen The delegation’s visit (three representatives of the civil society and one representative of the
15.12 World-AIDS-day in Chinandega On the 1st of December, Chinantlan realized an informational event in the central park of Chinandega, with more than 100 participating guests. Not only the information given out was of importance, but also the people’s interactivity on a topic of such significance. The participants were able to win small prices, as well as condoms, as the topic was relating to HIV, stigmatization and discrimination. It was a cheerful morning with dance and vocals, in order to show solidarity.
16.05. Donation from a pharmacy in our twinning city Leverkusen The pharmacy “Birkenapotheke” from our twinning city Leverkusen in Germany and their owner Peter Siefen support the AIDS-Project of the Asociación Chinantlan with a donation. Since January of this year the pharmacy and various clients donated, to realize in cooperation with the Aids-Group Leverkusen and the Nicaragua Group Leverkusen AIDS-tests in the population of Chinandega. On Monday, May 16 they handed over the donation of 510 € for the project.
11.05. Delivery of school packages In the primary school Jesus de Nazareth we delivered in cooperation with the mayor of Chinandega, Miriam Padilla and the Dutch partners Cees Volwater and Tom Tindeman the first school packages for the children of the project Millennium Goals.
All pupils and their parents where present during the delivery and could receive their materials. En total we delivered 25 packages with school materials and uniforms. Since many years we support in collaboration with the town halls of Chinandega and Eindhoven this project to support the children who can’t go to school without our help.
06.05. Installation of the irrigation system in the school gardens Friday, May 6 the Asociación Chinantlan began with the installation of the irrigation system and the first seed in the Jesus de Nazareth school. About 50 children started working after they got introduced by an agricultural expert of Chinantlan and prepared the soil, installed the irrigation system and seeded Corn, Tomatoes, Paprika and Amaranth.
27.04. Training for teachers in the establishment of school gardens Wednesday 27th of April, we realized a practical-theoretical training for 30 teachers from the municipality of Chinandega on the topic the establishment and correct handling of school gardens. The training was accomplished in the rooms of the ministry for education and treated themes like the establishment, the handling and the importance of school gardens for food security. Also many teachers where able to stimulate the discussion with their own knowledge. The goal of the school gardens is to improve the nutrition of the pupils, teachers, families and the population in general. The training was realized by Ayax Fonseca, agricultural responsible of Chinantlan and two cooperators of the American Peace Corps with a total duration of five hours.
16.04. Final of our Futbol Sala League Saturday 16th of April we realized the final of our “Futbol Sala” League. In the central park they played the matches in front of the responsible of Chinantlan, the national Police and many fans of the teams. The first and second team won a set of football shirts. Also the best scorer of the league won a shirt of the football club PSV Eindhoven, donated by our twinning city from Holland
08.03. Campaign in Germany for child workers of Chinandega In our twinning city Leverkusen, Germany the Nicaragua Group, as well as volunteers are starting a campaign for the child workers of the streets of Chinandega. In the beginning of April they will publish and afterwards regularly inform about the campaign that has the objective to find 100 donators for 100 school packages for the child workers of Chinandega until the end of the year. They will publish the result of the campaign on the 10th of December during celebration of the 25th anniversary of the city twinning between Chinandega and Leverkusen.
23.02. Meeting with representatives of rural communities in Chinandega On February 23, 2011 Asociación Chinantlan realized a meeting with 12 farmers from rural communities in Chinandega. The meeting was directed by Edwin Mendoza from the ministry of agriculture (MAGFOR), who informed the participants about the actual situation of the market for basic grains like corn or beans. Afterwards the members of Chinantlan and the farmers discussed the strategy for the first sowing of 2011, and irrigation systems, to ensure the food safety for the period 2011/2012. In the end they discussed possible problems or difficulties that could occur.
21.02. Inauguration of the new season of our football league Today, 21st of February the Asociación Chinantlan and the national Police of Nicaragua inaugurated the new season of our street football league with the 20 teams of young people in high social risk. Like in recent years the 20 teams are playing daily from 2 until 5 pm their matches in the city center of Chinandega. More than 100 adolescents and young adults from the different districts of Chinandega are participating, most of them in high social risk or with a criminal past.
Election of the new Board of FODEL On February 17 the Foundation of non-governmental organizations for the local development (FODEL) elected in a General Assembly their new board for the period 2011 – 2012. The new board contains the following members: - President Ana Darling Gonzales (Acidisan) - Secretary Javier Espinoza Perez (Chinantlan) - Fiscal Ana Calderon(OPTUPAN)
At the same time the strategically plan for the period 2010 – 2015 were presented.
07.02. Change of the roof of the El Naranjo school From the first until the 7th February 2011, the Asociación Chinantlan changed the roof of the El Naranjo school in Chinandega. The reparation was necessary, because the roof was damaged and contained cancer-causing asbestos. The old material was delivered and disposed on the local waste dump. The new roof now consists of corrugated iron. The change was financed by the Nicaragua Group Leverkusen, Germany with a budget of 1750 $. Seven people worked on the reparation.
New project of education for young people on the topic of AIDS In February the Asociación Chinantlan in cooperation with the organizations Casa del Joven, Horizontes 3000, AMC and GVC Italia, will start a new project. The goal is to improve the education of adolescents and young people about their rights on the topic of sexual and reproductive health. The work of Chinantlan includes the organization and realization of Workshops and educational events in the whole department of Chinandega. The project is financed by the European Commission.
Visit from the Nicaragua Group Leverkusen, Germany From December 12 to January 13th Wolfgang Heep, member of the Nicaragua Group Leverkusen in Germany, visited Chinandega. During his visit, he met various aspects of Chinantlan, like the Cooperative of producers of the Flor de Jamaica in El Manzano, the project of prevention of AIDS, the responsible persons of the football league for young criminals and the Wine production of the organization. Furthermore he contributed with several new ideas the development of Chinantlan. Since 1986 Wolfgang Heep visits Chinadega regularly and improves the relation between the two cities and their people.
Campaign to introduce child workers in the educational system On Tuesday, 11th of January Asociación Chinantlan, in cooperation with the town hall of Chinandega and other organizations like the youth network “Somos Nicas”, Profamilia and the ministry of education, organized a telethon from the central park to the market Bisne, to collect money to send 800 child workers from the streets of Chinandega to the school, to pay their uniforms, materials and food. More than 100 participants helped in the collection of the donations.

25.12. Delivery of solar dryers In this week, we delivered 10 solar dryers to 100 beneficiating producers of Flor de Jamaica and basic grains like wheat and corn, from the municipality of Chinandega, El Viejo and El Realejo. These solar dryers, with a valor of 15.000 $, are financed by the German embassy in Managua and can dry up to 20 quintals of seeds.
